How to use it

  1. Drop one PDF onto the page.
  2. Type or paste the bookmarks, one on each line: the title, then |, then the page number. Indent a line to put it under the one above.
  3. Press Add bookmarks and download the PDF. Open it and look in the bookmarks panel of your viewer.

Questions

How do I put a bookmark under another one?

Indent its line with spaces or a tab. A line that is indented more than the line above it becomes a child of that line. Lines with the same indent are on the same level.

The printed page 1 of my book is not the first page of the file. What do I do?

Use "Add to every page number". If the printed page 1 is the 5th page of the file, type 4. Then the numbers you type are the numbers printed on the pages.

Can I paste a table of contents?

Yes. Lines such as "Introduction ..... 3", or a title, a tab and a page number, are read too. Text copied from a PDF often loses its indents, so check the nesting in the bookmarks panel afterward.

What happens to the bookmarks the file already has?

You choose. Keep them, and the new ones are added after them. Or replace them: the old bookmarks are removed from the file, and their titles are not left behind in it.

Where does a bookmark take me?

To the top of its page, at the zoom you already use.

Does it change anything else in the file?

No. The pages, text, forms and links are as they were. A digital signature stops being valid, because it covers the exact bytes of the file and the file is saved again. You get a warning when a file has one.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device and are never sent to a server.

Is it free?

Yes, you can use it for free. A subscription removes limits and unlocks premium tools.
