How to use it

  1. Add a CSV or Excel file with one row for each code and the column names in the first row.
  2. Choose what each code holds: the text of one column, text built from several columns, or a contact card.
  3. Press Make the codes and download the ZIP. The index file lists every row and any that were skipped.

Questions

What should my file look like?

One row for each code, with the names of the columns in the first row. For a list of web addresses one column is enough. To build the text from several columns, choose “Text built from columns” and write it once with the column names in braces, for example https://example.com/item/{id}. For contact cards, name the columns like this: first name, last name, company, job title, phone, mobile, email, website, street, city, state, zip, country, note.

How many codes can I make at once?

Up to 5,000 rows in one run. A few hundred codes take a few seconds. If your file has more rows, split it and run each part.

What happens to a row that cannot become a code?

It is skipped, and the index.csv inside the ZIP says why: an empty cell, an address that is not an address, too much text for one code. The first few are also listed above the result. Rows with nothing in them are left out without a word.

Why do I get “does not look like a web address”?

By default the text is made into a web address, and https:// is added when it is missing. Text that is not an address (serial numbers, names) is skipped. Choose “Plain text” to use the cells as they are.

How are the files named?

By number (qr-001, qr-002 and so on) or, when you name a column, by what is in it. Characters that Windows and macOS do not allow in file names are replaced, and a name that appears twice gets (2), (3) and so on.

My first row is data, not column names. What now?

Untick “The first row holds the column names”. The columns are then called column_1, column_2 and so on, and you can also use their numbers.

Can I use an Excel file?

Yes, a .xlsx or .xlsm file. The first sheet is used, or the sheet you name. An old .xls file must be saved as .xlsx first.

Is my list uploaded?

No. The work happens in your browser, on your device. Your files are not sent to a server.

PNG or SVG?

PNG is a picture for screens and documents. SVG is made of lines and stays sharp at any size, so use it for print, labels and signs. The PNG is made so every module is a whole number of pixels, which keeps the edges crisp.

Are the scans counted? Do the codes expire?

No. Each code holds its text itself, with no redirect through our servers and no counter. It works as long as the thing it points to works, and it cannot be changed after it is printed.

Can I use rounded shapes or put a logo in the codes?

Not here. These codes use square modules, which scan best and are quick to make in large numbers. The single QR code generator has rounded shapes and colors for the corner squares; neither tool puts a logo in the code.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device and are never sent to a server.

Is it free?

This is a premium tool and is included with a Toolworld subscription.
