Questions
How strong is a passphrase from this tool?
The list has 2,099 words, so every word adds about 11.0 bits. Six words come to about 66 bits and eight to about 88. The shown strength counts only what is random: the words and the digits.
Why random words and not a sentence I made up?
Phrases people choose, such as song lines and sayings, are guessed far faster than random words. Words picked by a computer have no pattern to find.
Should I swap letters for symbols (e becomes 3)?
No. Attackers try those swaps first, so they add almost nothing. One more random word adds far more strength.
Is a passphrase better than a random password?
For something you must type or remember, such as your password manager’s master password or a laptop login, yes. For everything else, let a password manager store a long random password.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Your text is not uploaded or stored.
Is it free?
Yes, you can use it for free. A subscription removes limits and unlocks premium tools.
