Extract TAR / GZ
Open .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz and .gz files and download what is inside. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use it
- Add the .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz or .gz file.
- Press the button. Large archives are read in pieces, so they are fine.
- Download single files or all of them together.
Questions
Is the file uploaded?
No. It is opened on your device and nothing is sent anywhere.
Which files does it open?
Plain tar archives (the original, ustar, GNU and pax kinds, including long names and files over 8 GB), tar archives compressed with gzip (.tar.gz and .tgz), and a single file compressed with gzip (.gz).
What about .tar.bz2, .tar.xz and .tar.zst?
Those use other compression and are not supported yet. The message names the kind it found, so you know which program to use.
What happens to links and special files?
Symbolic links and device files are not unpacked, because a web page cannot create them, and the message says how many there were. A hard link gets a copy of the file it points to.
Is it safe to open a tarball from someone I do not know?
Opening is safe: nothing is run, names are made safe (no “..” and no absolute paths), and the size is checked as it is read, which stops “gzip bombs”. Be careful with what you do with the files afterwards.
Why is there a limit?
One run unpacks up to 20,000 files and 4.00 GB. For more, use tar on a computer.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. This tool runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device and are never sent to a server.
Is it free?
Yes, you can use it for free. A subscription removes limits and unlocks premium tools.
